Praveen Sood

The Government of India has officially extended the tenure of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Praveen Sood by one year, allowing him to continue in the top post until May 24, 2026. This decision was taken following a meeting of the high-level selection committee earlier this week and was subsequently approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).

The selection panel was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and included Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge. Based on the committee’s recommendations, the ACC cleared the extension, recognising Sood’s contributions to the premier investigative agency and the continuity required for handling ongoing cases of national importance.

Praveen Sood, a 1986-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Karnataka cadre, assumed charge as CBI Director on May 25, 2023, for an initial two-year term. With this extension, his tenure will now continue until May 2026. Before leading the CBI, Sood served as the Director General of Police (DGP) in Karnataka, where his tenure was marked by several notable reforms in policing and criminal investigation.

Born in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, in 1964, Sood entered the IPS at the young age of 22 after completing his civil engineering degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. His academic credentials also include postgraduate degrees from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bengaluru, and the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, New York, reflecting a blend of technical and administrative expertise.

During his distinguished career, Sood has led several high-profile investigations, many involving influential individuals and complex interstate and international dimensions. His leadership has been widely credited with modernising law enforcement systems, notably through the enhancement of the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) and the Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) in Karnataka. These initiatives, undertaken in close coordination with the judiciary, have improved the efficiency, transparency, and accountability of policing and investigation.

Under Sood’s stewardship, the CBI has taken on numerous sensitive cases, and his extension is expected to ensure stability in the agency’s leadership during a critical period. The government’s decision is seen as a reflection of its confidence in its ability to navigate the CBI through the evolving challenges of financial crimes, corruption, and cross-border investigations.
